Larry McLaughlin was raised near Carolina Pines Baptist Church and was a 1964 Garner High School graduate. He was a sergeant in an infantry platoon and received a Silver Star for his courageous actions in saving his squad during a fire fight in the action that cost him his life. His calm demeanor in the midst of battle earned him the respect of his men and of all of those who learned of his bravery.
