“We had landed in a small village to drop off and wait for a military officer. The kids were curious, and I encouraged them to come out. I enjoyed seeing them and did my best to interact with them. No verbal conversation, just exaggerated pantomime and play-acting. We both enjoyed it! I gave my lunch c-rations away (see short gentleman at my right elbow), as some of the other crew members did as well. My favorite photo. This is who I am.“I have another picture of me as a helicopter pilot in command: supplier of bullets to beans; inserter/extractor of combat troops; Cobra gun ship co-pilot and bringer of death; dust-off pilot and saver of lives. All in a day’s work. You’re welcome.”
