“I was a medic who was attached to the 1/16th infantry rangers. We were assigned many search and destroy and road clearing missions. We were on patrol on one of these “S&D” missions on June 15, 1967 near Phuoc Vihn when we were ambushed. An intense firefight followed.
“We lost several men and had to call Medevac helicopters to evacuate the wounded. The sniper fire was so intense that we had to carry our dead out, although we were able to get the wounded out on the helicopters.
“A photographer took the below picture of me (right) and my buddy Garcia as we waited for Medevac. The picture was used in newspapers across the country and is in the Vietnam Photographic history book and in the Ken Burns documentary.”
