This picture was taken after Crumpler left the hospital, possibly at Fort Gordon. He was wounded in the knee in Vietnam and had to be evacuated to the states. The wound ended his combat capability.
He had graduated from West Point and had planned a career in the U.S. Army. The wound effectively ended that plan. He resigned his commission in 1968 and went to law school.
